Vonage V-Phone Released

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Well, I just got an email from Vonage letting me know that they released their new V-Phone.  Cool, but here is my one-and-only question.  Can you use your existing Vonage phone number when travelling about with the new V-Phone. I poked around for a few minutes on the Vonage site, checked out their “Help” section and here is my conclusion. They do not mention what phone number you get to use, so I will assume that means that you have to get a new one. That seems to be the way that companies “tease” you into using a product that does not work exactly as it should these days.  In my head, the way it should work is, when you plug your new V-Phone into your computer and it is connected to the internet, it let’s the Vonage system know you are in mobile mode and it routes all incoming phone calls to your Vonage number or numbers you specify to the new V-Phone. When it is not connected, they get routed as they normally do.  Done.

CalTrain Testing WiMaxx and WiFi

Monday, August 7th, 2006

Looks like CalTrain is not as retarded as I thought they are. ABC reported last week that they are testing a WiMaxx / WiFi setup on a 16 mile stretch of track between San Francisco and San Jose somewhere. The system is using WiFi locally on the trains and transmitting and receiving to base stations outside of the train using WiMaxx. Pretty slick.

Now if they can just let people on the train more than 5 minutes beforehand, when there are 200 people waiting, the train is clean and ready and the north entrance to the station in San Francisco is blocked because people are lining up to get on the train.

Smoking SATA II Hard Drive Deal

Monday, August 7th, 2006

Just came across this smoking hot hard drive deal at Newegg.com.  It is a 320GB SATA II drive from Seagate with a 16MB buffer…all for $95.  That is a pretty sweet deal. I would pick one up, but I don’t have any room in my case for another drive and I have to get the desk sorted out before I start sticking external drive enclosures all over the place. Matter of fact, I need to get me a top-of-the-line USB 2.0 hub. Any recommendations?
